Set of 4 S64 chairs by Marcel Breuer for Thonet, 1929.
The S 32 chair and S 64 for the armrest version are true modernist classics. The minimalist and functional model designed by Marcel Breuer in 1929 is a case study of his work with bended steel started as he still was student at the Bauhaus in Weimar. The cantilever chair was produced from 1930 by Thonet and is one of the best-seller of the manufacturer, it furnishes many modern interiors, restaurants, offices as well as institutions. S34 is a timless design icon due to its aesthetic reduction and clarity, and is still a synonym for elegance today.
The designer and architect Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) is a major Bauhaus figure. As a Walter Gropius’ student, he began to work on furniture, mostly wooden geometric furniture, design inspired by De Stijl. In 1925, he experiments with tubular steel designed for serial production. The story says he got the idea while observing the handlebar of his bicycle. During that time, he designs his most famous Bauhaus furniture, like the Wassily chair or the B32 or Cesca cantilever chair (today called S32).
