Rare wingback chair mod. 36/401 by Alvar Aalto, early Wohnbedarf production, 1937.
Alvar Aalto (1898 – 1976) is a major architect of the 20th century as well as an influent designer. He is considered as a pioneer in the development of plywood technics. Aalto produced most of his icons during the 20’s and the 30’s, some in the context of large-scale architecture project like the Paimio Sanatorium.
The high back cantilevered armchair mod. 36/401 is a Scandinavian modern design icon by Alvar Aalto. It is still produced by Artek, but the exemplar here is the early and collectable Swiss edition by Wohnbedarf, easily recognizable by the form of the wingback and seat.
The solid birch frame is in very good vintage condition but shows patina and wear, the seat and back have been newly upholstered with Remix fabric by Kvadrat.
From the 30’s Alvar Aalto designs many plywood furniture pieces: armchairs, chairs, tables, stools etc. Many of them are still produced by Artek, that he co-founded in 1935.
